About YVAN DENG
His unconditional love for fashion and his passion for art and painting have resulted in Yvan Deng becoming the only live illustrator at Shanghai & Paris Fashion Week.
Deng’s talent has been recognized by fashion publications such as Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, InStyle, ELLE MAN, WWD, Madame Figaro, and Modern Weekly among many others. His work has pushed boundaries, integrating expressionism into the contemporary high fashion scene. Largely influenced by Oriental women’s and high fashion photography, Yvan’s ceramics and paintings are distinctly recognizable by depicting faces with slanted eyes, big earrings, and finely arched eyebrows. He describes his process of creation as free, self-centered, and emotional. Skillful with mixed media, especially oriental ink, he draws his inspiration from traditional Chinese ink painting.
What materials do you use?
We usually use mixed medias to create a piece of art, such as Chinese ink, watercolor, paper collage, iPad drawing and so on.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
The source of my paintings is the unconscious. Everything could be my inspiration, the Runway, a trip, a book, or some masters’ artworks…I enjoy to inject a sense of fashion and artistic spirit into my daily life.
What is the creation process for your work?
Usually I draw them on a sketch book, or on canvas, sometimes I create an illustration animation to express different point of views , my idea.
What inspired you to start doing this?
I started painting when I was six, my grandmother was my first tutor, she taught me how to paint with chalks on concrete floor. Then I started understanding Chinese painting, At that time I learned how to express my emotion in a conceptual way.
Who do you create your work for?
We have different kind of works, the ones that are customers request and our art pieces. We help our customers to reach an audience with a more fashion-forward thinking. We collaborate with the main department stores and fashion brands. Our customers are the most influential editorial fashion magazines and fashion brands. We also collaborate with different galleries in different countries.
What are some of the projects you are most proud of?
Every work is a very important combined achievement for me and my team, especially the Visual Art of window Display we created for Lane Crawford in the spring of 2018. This was our first formal business cooperation, and it was also a very important work in my career. This task was divided into four parts. Inspired by the fashion shows in spring and summer of 2018, we communicated, discussed and brainstormed with Lane Crawford creative team for many times in a short period. At that time, the process of cooperation was very smooth and challenging. When we saw the works presented in the shop, I was very excited , which also gave me great affirmation and encouragement.
How has Chinese culture shaped your work?
I’m Chinese so my work reflects the Chinese culture in a more traditional but contemporary style.
What is your dream for your brand?
We want to show our art to all the world and collaborate with the most important fashion brands creating art.
What should we be looking forward to seeing from you next?
We are working in different situations, art pieces (collections) and a new ceramic collection. Our new book is going to be published soon, we are so excited about it.
